What Should I Consider When Choosing a Wireless Data Plan for Airstream Connected?
Selecting the right data plan is the first and most important step in the Airstream Connected activation process.
Every Airstreamer’s data needs are different, and wireless carriers offer countless plans. So, finding the plan that best serves your needs may require some research. Here are some things to consider as you wade through the data plan offerings:
Nationwide coverage - Plans with nationwide (US) coverage ensure that you are connected most anywhere you roam. The leading nationwide carriers are:
Coverage areas may vary between carriers, so review their coverage maps, especially if you plan to spend time in more remote areas. This composite coverage map, created by the Federal Communications Commission, is another good resource.
Many Airstream Connected power users, including those who live on the road or enjoy boondocking, purchase data plans from two different carriers whose coverage areas complement each other.
Wireless carriers typically offer two types of plans: postpaid and prepaid. Postpaid plans are billed at the end of a monthly billing cycle and require a contract. Prepaid plans are paid in advance.
Postpaid plans are the carriers’ centerpiece offerings and usually come with the best features, including faster speed and better customer support. Not surprisingly, they are usually more expensive than prepaid plans. A prepaid plan for Airstream Connected might make sense for those with a limited need for data or those who only occasionally use their Airstreams.
Postpaid plans can be purchased on the carrier’s website or in brick-and-mortar retail centers. Prepaid plans can also be purchased directly from the carrier. Many carriers also have prepaid subsidiaries. Visible, for example, is owned by Verizon.
As you shop plans, take the time to learn how a plan works. First, make sure the plan can be used with a SIM card and router. Some plans are designed exclusively for phones and tablets.
The plan’s definition of “unlimited data” is another important consideration. It’s not uncommon for carriers to slow or deprioritize the data of unlimited users for the rest of the month after they’ve used a certain amount of data.
You will also want to check the contract terms, especially any cancellation penalties.
How Do I Get a SIM Card from My Preferred Carrier?
Once you have settled on a data plan, you will need a SIM card from your chosen carrier.
