For most of us, camping is a way to escape people and get closer to nature. Traditional campgrounds provide an excellent base for those pursuits. But for a next-level, totally immersive outdoor experience, there’s nothing like off-grid, dispersed camping - a.k.a. boondocking. In this episode of Ask an Airstreamer, five veteran Airstream boondockers share their insight on this increasingly popular way to get away from it all.

What is boondocking? How to boondock with planning? How to camp off the grid?
Five veteran Airstream boondockers share their insight on this increasingly popular way to get away from it all. This panel includes Cass Beach, a full-time Basecamp solo adventurer; Nina and Eric Ritchie, who boondock regularly with two young kids; and Jonathan and Ashley Longnecker, recognized experts in the art of off-grid camping who live in their vintage Airstream with four children.
Defining Boondocking (Dry Camping)
Boondocking is most commonly defined as, “A brushy rural area or location; To camp in a dry brushy location; To stay in a recreational vehicle in a remote location, without connections to water, power, or sewer services.” Although boondocking is sometimes popular in places like Walmart parking lots, most often it means that you’re camping out in the boondocks.
For Airstreamers, boondocking is perhaps the ultimate adventure. Getting comfortable with boondocking’s best practices creates an entirely new level of possibility. Boondocking adds a nearly infinite number of locations in which to find new experiences and to write new chapters to your travel story.
Whether you call it dry camping, free camping, boondocking or dispersed camping, we have the best planning resources and pro tips to make the experience easier and more enjoyable.
