Airstream travel trailer windows have rubber seals around the edges which in certain conditions can become sticky, causing the glass to adhere to the window frame in a way that can make them difficult to open. In these situations, it's important to understand the best way to get the windows unstuck. Too much pressure can potentially cause the window to break.
For years, Airstreamers have found creative ways to loosen their windows when they stick. From preventative measures to "the credit card trick", there are many options to manage these sticky situations. So, how do you safely open your Airstream windows when they stick, and what can you do to prevent it from happening again?
Why are the windows on my Airstream travel trailer sticking?
Airstream travel trailer windows have rubber seals around the edges which in hot or dusty conditions can become sticky, making them more difficult to open. Dirty window seals can also stick from the build up that occurs overtime from your many Airstream adventures.
I can’t get my Airstream's window open easily. What should I do?
When your window won’t open and you want fresh air, there are a few things you can try to help unstick your window.
First, ensure you are properly opening the window.
Step 1: Open the handle by pulling away from the window, and then unlock the latch by rotating the handle until the latch slides out of the slot.
Step 2: Grab the lift handles located halfway up the window frame
Step 3: Lift evenly on both levers to open the window
If this doesn’t open your window, there are a few mores things you can try:
Many Airstreamers have found success gently sliding an old credit card or driver’s license in between the glass and the rubber gasket and then sliding the credit card around the edge of the window to release any built up gunk causing the window to stick.
Remember: When opening your Airstream windows, always lift both handles at the same time with equal pressure to prevent the window from bending. If too much pressure is applied to one side, it is possible the window will crack.
How do I prevent my Airstream windows from sticking?
You can help prevent sticking windows by regularly cleaning window seals with soapy water and applying a silicone product or 303 Aerospace Protectant to the seals. You can purchase 303 Aerospace Protectant from our official store, Airstream Supply Company.
Clean the edge of the window glass as well to prevent build up over time, which leads to difficult to open windows.
