Depending on your Airstream’s model, you may have a Fantastic Fan or a Max Air fan installed to help keep your travel trailer cool and circulate air throughout the interior.
How do I operate the exhaust fan?
You can open the exhaust fan lid manually by pulling down on the motor, which disengages the motor and allows you to turn the knob manually which will open or close the lid.
There is a knob beside the fan to set the temperature of your fan, prompting it to turn on and off at different temperatures. There is also a fan speed switch, with speed options from 0-4. A power on and off switch and a lid open and close switch are also both located near the fan.
If you are using the fan motor (as opposed to manually opening the fan) and the fan is open, the rain sensor will get wet and trigger the lid to close.
Can I use the exhaust fan to bring fresh air into my travel trailer?
Your exhaust fan can be opened, along with another exterior window or door, in order to create a cross-breeze in your travel trailer and bring in fresh air. The suction of the exhaust fan will pull air through your trailer and up through the vent.
What regular maintenance do I need to perform on the exhaust fan?
Cleaning the screen of your exhaust fan will keep it running properly. There is a tab next to the fan, which you can pull down to release the fan screen. Be sure to disengage the fan motor before you remove the screen. Wash the screen in the sink, let it air dry, then reattach.
You should also clean the lid, using a 303 protectant on the lid gasket, and check the sealants every year.
Be sure to always close the lid when in motion, as the force of the wind can rip the lid off of your travel trailer. Ensuring the fan lid is closed before you travel should be added to your departure road trip checklist.
Do I need to winterize the exhaust fan?
It is best to leave the exhaust lid open slightly, as long as there is no risk of rain or snow entering into your Airstream. Air circulation helps keep the temperature even, avoiding unwanted expansion and contraction of materials that can cause cracks or stress points. It also helps to avoid mold and wildlife inhabitation.
It is not recommended to leave the exhaust fan running when in storage, as it can wear out the motor as well as drain the battery, which can damage it.
My exhaust fan stopped working. What can I do to fix it?
If your exhaust fan has stopped working, first check the fuse on the fan and in the power center. If something has gotten stuck in the exhaust fan blade, for example, the fan is designed to blow the fuse instead of burn out the motor.
If your exhaust fan is still not working, a replacement may be required. You can schedule a service appointment at a local dealership for assistance.
